Aluminum and Titanium Metallurgy
& Forging 101 Workshop
March 6, 2023
3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The Aluminum and Titanium Metallurgy & Forging 101 Workshop is a 3-hour short course focused on metallurgical technology and applications for aluminum and titanium alloys relevant to the forging industry.

This course will take place prior to the FIA Forging Lightweight Alloys Conference at The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa.

Location:
The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa
101 Montelago Boulevard
Casablanca AB Room
Henderson, NV 89011

Instructors:
Professor Blair London
Materials Engineering Department/California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Mark Timko
Executive Technical Advisor
Weber Metals, Inc.

Part 1: Science & Engineering Background
This Course begins with a brief treatment of how Materials Engineers view materials and applications. The basics of Al and Ti from the elements themselves to their alloys are then presented. The major property values of Al and Ti alloys are covered along with examples of common applications. Sufficient engineering background is provided to understand the fundamentals and uses of phase diagrams. The phases that form for both alloys with changing temperature and composition are presented.

Part 2 Mechanical Properties
The major mechanical properties of materials, stiffness, strength, and ductility are explained from mechanics and materials engineering viewpoints. Elastic and plastic deformation are covered and linked to specific material behavior. Dislocations are presented to explain plastic deformation in metals. The tensile test is covered along with the important features of the stress-strain curve for engineering alloys. Examples of Al and Ti alloy stress-strain curves are presented.

Part 3: Heat Treatment, Metallurgical Details
The final section of the course uses all the material covered in Parts 1 and 2 to explain the heat treatment of Al and Ti alloys. Age hardening of Al alloys is explained in detail. Common heat treatment designations for Al alloys are presented. The heat treatment of Ti alloys is covered by examining those for Ti-6Al-4V. microstructural examples of Ti-6-4 following various heat treatments are included. Metallurgical details associated with Al and Ti alloy forging are presented.
