Registration for this event is now closed and the event is at capacity.
If you have questions about this program, please contact Angela Gibian at angela@forging.org.

Location:

The Drury Hotel

1380 E 6th St.

Cleveland, OH 44114

This 1 ½ day workshop will act to introduce participants to the different types of mechanical presses. It will provide an explanation of the various elements of the press to provide an understanding of how they work and their interaction and influence on other parts of the press forging process. The emphasis of this workshop is predictive and preventative maintenance of the elements of the press, how to improve the uptime of your machines, and items that should be taken into consideration when planning a repair.

At the end of day one, a hosted cocktail reception will be offered for all attendees and instructors.  This event will allow ample time for attendees to become acquainted and network with one another.  It will also allow for attendees to interact with course instructors on a more informal level.

Who Should Attend?

  • Maintenance Department Leaders
  • Press Maintenance Specialists
  • Forge Cell Leaders
  • Plant Engineers
  • General Managers and Production managers, to receive a better understanding of the importance of scheduling planned predictive and preventative maintenance to minimize/avoid unexpected down time

Workshop Topics:

Overview of the Different Types of Presses
The presentation will include the topics of:

1. Compare and contract different forging equipment types

2. How a mechanical press works

3. Key components & terminology

4. Discussion of various mechanical press drive train types
5. Frame construction types
6. Upper and lower ejector types
7. Shut height adjustment mechanisms
8. Force & energy
9. Press stalling
10. Failure modes: gross overload, fatigue & wear

Foundations

The installation of forging presses has evolved over the past several decades. Installations commonly used massive foundations and anchors and employed felt, cork, and even used tires for isolation of vibration. Now it is common to use highly engineered steel coil spring and elastomer isolation systems. This two part presentation will first focus on how press level and alignment affects machine wear and energy usage. Maintenance of the support and reconditioning will be covered. The second half of the presentation will cover site selection with emphasis on soil investigation and preparation, foundation types and design, and vibration mitigation techniques. Some "rules of thumb" for project management of foundation projects will be presented.

Drive Train

The presentation will include:
1. Complete explanation of drive train
2. Detailed explanation of drive train including: flywheel and pinion gears, eccentric shaft assemblies,

Pitman/Ram assemblies, and adjustment and clearance
3. Clutch systems- including diaphragms and multi-plate hydraulics
4. Brake systems- disc and brands
5. Belt drives- types, materials, storage, and adjustment
6. Gears & Gear Trains- specific explanation of different types, tooth forms, gear wear,

what to look for, and warning signs of problems
7. Bearings- different types of bearings used in presses, correct handling, storage, removal,

         and installation of bearings

Pneumatics

This presentation will include:
1. Explanation of pneumatics on presses with particular emphasis on counterbalance cylinders,
    pneumatic ejectors, etc.

2. Importance of a quality air supply

Hydraulics

The presentation will include:
1. Explanation of ejector systems, die pockets, wedge systems with hydraulic or air assist

Lubrication Systems

The presentation will include:

1. Chemistry & additive selections in lubricant formulations to optimize performance
2. Lubricant qualification, tribology and chemical evaluations methods
3. Lubricant selection considerations
4. Condition monitoring of lubricants
5. Product options

Technologies to Use in Preventative Maintenance

This talk will discuss some of the technologies that are available to use on or around your forging presses to help in preventative maintenance. This will include a discussion of items you can wire on to your press for constant monitoring as well as tools you can use for periodic checks. These items are good for providing data that can lead to early detection of problems so you can schedule repairs rather than deal with unexpected down time.

Overview of Electrical Systems

The presentation will include:
1. Explanation of the electrical control systems of presses, including OSHA implications,
drive motors, types of switches, etc.

Mechanical Press Repair Options

The repair/ replace decision is always a difficult one when faced with worn, damaged or broken components from mechanical forging presses.  Delivery time, durability and safety are always factors in the evaluation.  If the decision is to go with a repair more than one option is typically available there as well.  This presentation will discuss some of the more common areas of failure with mechanical presses and some of the options available for the repair of these parts.

Predictive and Preventative Systems

This presentation will include:
1. Methods of recording and monitoring equipment failures to enable identification and prediction of problems-
enabling preventative measures to be taken

Planning for Lead Time for Spare Parts

This presentation will include:

1. Maintenance Storeroom management
2. Inventory reduction trends
3. Determining needs
4. Lead time
5. Receiving time
6. Cost of down time
